Hydration: The Recovery Tool You’re Probably Underusing (11/52)

Fitness is at the center of what we do.

To Tilla Fit, fitness isn’t optional.

It’s something that every person needs.

Over the past year, we shared 52 reasons WHY people need fitness.

Now we shift to the next question.

HOW do you start?

HOW do you stay consistent?

HOW do you build a lifestyle that lasts?

HOW do you get results?

Over the next 52 weeks, we’ll answer those questions.

Here is week 11 of 52 on HOW to approach fitness.

“Hydration: The Recovery Tool You’re Probably Underusing”

Last week, we talked about the most powerful recovery tool available to us: sleep.

This week, let’s talk about another tool you use every single day.

Water.

Your body is largely made up of water, and nearly every system involved in exercise and recovery depends on having enough of it.

Water helps regulate body temperature.

It helps transport nutrients throughout the body.

It supports normal muscle function.

It helps maintain blood volume so oxygen and nutrients can reach working muscles.

And it helps replace the fluid you lose every time you sweat.

When you’re under-hydrated, everything gets a little harder.

Your heart has to work harder during exercise.

Your workouts can feel more difficult.

Your energy can drop.

Your ability to regulate body temperature declines.

And your performance can suffer.

That matters because better workouts + better recovery = better results.

If your goal is getting stronger, you want to walk into your workouts hydrated and ready to perform.

If your goal is improving cardiovascular fitness, hydration helps your body handle the demands of exercise, especially in the heat.

If your goal is weight loss, drinking water isn’t a magic fat-loss solution, but replacing high-calorie drinks with water and staying hydrated can make your overall nutrition plan much easier to follow.

And if your goal is simply feeling and performing better throughout the day, hydration matters there too.

So how do you improve it?

Step 1: Start Your Day With Water

Before the coffee, energy drink, or busy schedule takes over, drink some water.

You’ve just gone hours without consuming fluids.

Start replenishing them early.

Step 2: Keep Water With You

Make hydration convenient.

Carry a bottle to work.

Keep one in your car.

Bring it to the gym.

If water is sitting beside you, you’re much more likely to drink it.

Step 3: Drink Throughout the Day

Don’t wait until your workout to start hydrating.

Think of hydration as an all-day process.

Drink regularly with meals and throughout your workday, then make sure you’re drinking before, during, and after longer or sweatier workouts.

Step 4: Pay Attention to Your Body

Your needs aren’t exactly the same as everyone else’s.

Hot weather, long workouts, physical jobs, and heavy sweating all increase your fluid needs.

Thirst is useful, and the color of your urine can provide another simple clue. Consistently very dark urine can be a sign that you need more fluids, while pale yellow is generally a reasonable target.

Step 5: Remember Electrolytes When Appropriate

If you’re sweating heavily, exercising for a long period, or training outside in the Florida heat, you’re losing more than water.

You’re losing electrolytes too.

In those situations, replacing sodium and other electrolytes through food or an electrolyte drink can help support hydration.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need to obsess over hydration.

You need to make it a habit.

Fitness results aren’t only determined by what happens during your workout.

They’re also determined by what you do during the other 23 hours of your day.

This Week’s Challenge:

For the next seven days:

Drink water when you wake up.

Carry a water bottle with you.

Drink consistently throughout the day.

Drink extra around sweaty workouts and hot days.

Pay attention to how you feel.

Make hydration automatic.

Because the better you support your recovery, the more you can get out of the hard work you’re already putting in.
